Biographical Information[edit]
Chet Vincent began his professional career with the 1953 Oshkosh Giants, going 14-9 with a 2.64 ERA, second in the circuit behind Mel Heim. Hid 203 strikeouts in 181 innings (only 127 hits allowed, but 139 walks) were second in the Wisconsin State League to Del Bastock. Vincent also played the outfield on occasion and hit .239/~.427/.306 as an excellent OBP threat. A year later, Chet went 6-6, 5.42 for the Sioux City Soos. Missing the 1955-1956 seasons, Vincent returned in 1957 with the Springfield Giants and went 6-11 with a 3.71 ERA. He spent the next three years in Springfield, posting marks of 5-2, 1.73; 5-3, 2.45 and 2-0, 3.23. In 1961, he finished his playing career with the Victoria Rosebuds and Rio Grande Valley Giants of the Texas League, retiring with a career record of 38-31.
Personal Recollection[edit]
Chester "Chet" Vincent was a teammate of mine on the 1953 Oshkosh Giants of the Class D Wisconsin State League. He was a good lefthanded pitcher, age about 21. My recollection is that he had been in college for about 2 years before he played in Oshkosh. In 1953, he tied with me, a righthanded pitcher, for the most wins on the team. We each won 14. My understanding is that the next season (1954) he moved up in classification in the Giants farm system and played for Sioux City in the Class A Western League. Dave Garcia, our manager in Oshkosh, also moved up to manage Sioux City that year. I believe Chet was later in military service and then resumed his baseball career for a few years, playing mostly Class A ball. After his baseball days, he finished college and then had a career as a high school coach and physical education teacher in Poughkeepsie, NY.
