Biographical Information[edit]

Cheng-Jui Sung has been an outfielder in the Chinese Professional Baseball League and for the Taiwanese national team.

Sung was drafted by the CTBC Brothers in the second round of the 2020 CPBL Draft; he received a 3.8 million NT dollars signing bonus.[1] Sung was a backup outfielder in 2021, and he hit .237/.298/.395 in 56 games. He robbed Giljegiljaw Kungkuan of a homer on October 3, and this play was voted as "Play of the Year" in the CPBL. The young outfielder struggled in 2022, only hitting .100/.100/.133 in 35 games. The Brothers still brought him into the 2022 Taiwan Series as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement, and he was 1-for-4; that hit was a single against Yu-Hsun Chen in Game 1. The Brothers swept the Rakuten Monkeys, and Sung won his first Taiwan Series title.[2]

The Kaohsiung native's poor batting still limited him in 2023, and he only had 44 at-bats with a .182/.200/.227 batting line. He played well in the minors, hitting .325/.410/.433 in 36 games. Sung then made it onto Taiwan's roster for the 2023 Asian Championship. He was 1-for-4 in the entire event - the only hit was a 2-run single against Alexander Cheuk-Hei Chan of Hong Kong in the 5th inning. Taiwan was beaten by Japan in the title game as they won Silver in the event. [3]

Sung was a two-way player in high school, and the Brothers sometimes let him pitch in lopsided scores. His fastball peak was 96.3 mph, and he had a curveball and a slider.
