Biographical Information

Charlie Silvera played backup catcher for the New York Yankees for nearly a decade. He was the same age as Yogi Berra, the starting catcher. Although only logging the equivalent of one full season (541 plate appearances) in his 10 year M.L. career, he retired with a superior .282 batting average and 35 percent on-base-percentage. However, he managed only one career homer.

He missed the 1943-1945 seasons serving in the military.

After his playing days, Silvera managed and coached in the minors (1958-1960, 1970), scouted for the Washington Senators (1961-1968), and coached the Minnesota Twins (1969), Detroit Tigers (1971-1973), and Texas Rangers (1973-1975). He worked with former Yankees teammate Billy Martin at all three coaching stops.

Notable Achievements

• Won four World Series with the New York Yankees (1949, 1950, 1951 & 1956; he did not play in the 1950, 1951 and 1956 World Series)
