Biographical Information

Charlie Gibson played one game for the 1905 St. Louis Browns. Veteran catcher Joe Sugden was nearing the end of his career, and hit only .173 in 1905. The Browns tried another young catcher in 1905 for one game, Branch Rickey, and went with him as their regular in 1906. Gibson had been an amateur standout in Sharon, referred to as "the well-known catcher." Before joining the Sharon team in the Ohio-Pennsylvania League in 1905 he played for the Carnegie Steel team, being named captain in 1904. On March 4, 1907 the Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Gibson had been contracted to play with Rochester for the 1907 season but gave up baseball to become paymaster for Carnegie Steel. According to the April 27, 1932 Pittsburgh Press, he was an Alderman for the Twenty-first Ward.
