Biographical Information

Charles Power, also sometimes called Charles Powers, was an umpire who worked his first major league games in the short-lived Union Association in 1884. He then worked a handful of games in the National League from 1893 to 1895 before coming back to the circuit for a longer stint in 1902, when he worked his final game on July 31st.

He started his minor league career as a pitcher in 1887 with Eau Claire in the Northwestern League. Later that season he also played for Oshkosh. When his arm failed him, he became an umpire. He was umpiring in the Western League in 1888. After the season he turned to sports writing, becoming the sports editor of the Pittsburgh Dispatch in 1893. In 1895 he was President of the Iron and Oil League, then became the President of the Inter-State League in 1896, and remained in that position through the 1900 season. In 1907 he presided over the Western Pennsylvania League.
