Biographical Information[edit]
Corner infielder Charles Bates played in the Detroit Tigers minor league system from 1973 to 1976.
He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 6th round of the 1971 January Draft-Secondary Phase, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the Tigers in the 1st round, 19th overall, of the 1973 amateur draft. He was picked in the same round as Hall of Famer Robin Yount and ahead of notable catchers Steve Swisher and Steve Nicosia.
He hit .276/.358/.402 with 68 hits in 75 games for the Lakeland Tigers in 1973, but slumped to .234/.297/.315 with 109 hits in 133 games for the Montgomery Rebels in 1974. In 1975, he hit .276/.351/.431 with 100 hits in 101 games between Montgomery and the Clinton Pilots and in 1976, he hit .263/.345/.364 with 91 hits in 111 games for Montgomery.
Overall, he hit .259/.333/.372 with 368 hits in 420 games over four seasons.
