Category talk:NFL Players

From BR Bullpen

I was wondering if it would be Ok to expand this page to include NFL players who didn't make the majors - this would enable us to make pages for guys like Sammy Baugh, John Elway or Rickey Williams, who played minor league ball. It would also give an avenue for a guy like Wally Yonamine, in the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame and a former San Fran 49er.

Of course, if we also expand it beyond NFL, we can include pre-NFL pro football players like Ed Abbaticchio.

I just wanted to see what the page's designer thinks, as they specifically made a list of NFL/MLB players.

Another idea - a category for baseball/NBA players like Ron Reed, Chuck Connors, Gene Conley, Bill Sharman, Danny Ainge.

Good idea but...[edit]

I think we need to focus on baseball players. Yes, Elway hit .300 in his year in A ball but I think that the database would be better served by an anecdote about, say Ivey Wingo rather than John Elway, Dan Marino, or Sammy Baugh.

The major problem I have is, where is the cutoff? Condredge Holloway was a fine shortstop and a better quarterback but he played in the CFL.

If I want Sammy Baugh information, I'm going to pro-football-reference.com or the Football Hall of Fame or wikipedia. This is not the place I'd look. Once we get the major jobs done, then we can focus on these ancillary people.

As for the basketball idea, great. I think I even have that list somewhere around here.

My reply[edit]

I agree that the cutoff is the tough point. OTOH, what about the guys who will get pages here who were football players? Yonamine is a great example - he's one of the NPB stars who deserves a bio here and was also notable as the first Japanese-American football player.

I also agree that it's most important to cover the careers of MLB guys before NFL guys who played some minor league ball but I am jumping around a bit in who I write bios of - in addition to MLB players who had empty pages here, I've entered some minor league stars, some Negro Leaguers, some Japanese baseball stars, etc.

Reply[edit]

When Yonamine gets his page, he should be included. Should the designation be added for Fred Sington and Jackie Jensen both who are in the College Football Hall of Fame but didn't play in the NFL?

Let's not create pages for people who aren't significant for their baseball talent.

We recently got to 150 entries. - --Mischa (talk) 17:03, 12 March 2014 (EDT)

Is it just me, or are there lots of quarterbacks here relative to other positions? - --Mischa 20:38, 9 October 2010 (EDT)

That's actually not surprising. Of the major sports, I believe baseball is the most dependent on a broad array of skills, as opposed to a mastery of one (i.e. Ozzie Smith vs. Kevin Maas). Quarterback might be the position on the football field which requires the broadest set of skills in football. --Jeff 21:23, 9 October 2010 (EDT)

Not being a big football fan, what does quarterbacking require other than to throw (and maybe run?) Doesn't defensive back or receiver (speed, coordination, routes) need more skills? Again, it's not a sport I know well. - --Mischa 21:26, 9 October 2010 (EDT)

At some point, we topped 200 here - Mischa (talk) 10:14, 17 July 2022 (UTC)

Instead of including NFL Coaches here, maybe a separate listing for them? Seems odd to conflate the two. - Mischa (talk) 13:50, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

There are very few NFL coaches with a baseball connection, and in the college basketball and college football categories, we include coaches as well as players. Philippe (talk) 20:35, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
