Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Carson Whisenhunt was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 2nd round of the 2022 amateur draft, out of East Carolina University. He had gone 6-2, 3.77 in 13 starts in 2021, then pitched for the USA College National Team during the summer, but had not played at all during the 2022 college season after failing a pre-season PED test and being rule ineligible as a result. He did make four starts in the Cape Cod League after the end of the college season, however. The suspension likely cost him a shot at being a first-round pick, as the 2022 draft was particularly thin on top-level pitching. He claimed the positive was due to his taking an over-the-counter nutritional supplement that he did not know contained the banned substance.
He began his pro career in 2022 with the ACL Giants Orange, and also made a couple of appearances with the San Jose Giants of the California League, with no record and a virgin ERA over 7 2/3 innings between the two teams. After the season, he pitched another 3 games in the Arizona Fall League. In 2023, he played for three different teams: San Jose, the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League, and the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Eastern League. He was named to the National League team for the 2023 Futures Game, but the selection seems to have been based mainly on potential rather than on actual accomplishments (apart from being named the Northwest League Pitcher of the Month in May): overall, he pitched just 58 2/3 innings in his 16 starts, with a record of 1-1, and was shut down in July due to elbow strain, not pitching again after that. He did have a good ERA at 2.45, and a K/W ratio of 83/23, but still had fewer than 100 professional innings under his belt after two seasons in the minors, when all but one of his appearances were as a starting pitcher.
