Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Carmen Mlodzinski was drafted in the 2020 amateur draft's Competitive Balance Round A by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 31st overall pick. He was coming out of the University of South Carolina where he had played three seasons. Both his sophomore and junior seasons were cut short, by a broken foot in 2019 and by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, but he had pitched well enough in the Cape Cod League in 2019 and in 4 starts before the shutdown in 2020 to convince the Pirates to expend a high pick on him. His 2020 season was actually considered a redshirt sophomore season given his injury the previous year, but he decided to accept the Pirates' contract offer in any case.

He started his professional career in 2021 with the Greensboro Grasshoppers of High-A East, where he started 14 games, and also pitched 2 innings in one AAA game with the Indianapolis Indians. At Greensboro, he went 2-3 3.93 and logged 50 1/3 innings while being treated carefully given his lack of action over the previous two years. He also pitched in the Arizona Fall League after the season. In 2022, he was allowed to pitch 105 1/3 innings with the Altoona Curve of the Eastern League, finishing at 6-8, 4.78 and striking out 111 opponents.
