Biographical Information

Carlos Santiago, once known as the "King of the Double Play," was an infielder in the Negro Leagues. He played second base and shortstop for the New York Cubans in 1945 and 1946. He also spent some time with the Atlanta Black Crackers.

He played for the Stamford Bombers in the Colonial League in 1947. The Cleveland Indians invited Santiago to spring training in 1951, but he was drafted into the U.S. Army prior to playing in the major leagues. He served in the Korean War before being discharged as a sergeant.

Santiago worked as a coach and scout following his military career and eventually became the General Manager for the Mayaguez Indians - a team he had played for prior to playing in the Negro Leagues. In 2003, Santiago was chosen by local sportswriters as the second baseman for the Mayaguez All-Time All-Star team.

He was inducted into the Puerto Rican Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993. At the time of his death in 2008 from cardiac failure, Santiago was a member of the Board of Directors for the Negro League Baseball Players Association.
