Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Carlos Fortuna played in the Kansas City Royals farm system from 2007 to 2009.

He was signed by Royals scout Daurys Nin in January 2007. He began his career with the DSL Royals in 2007, going 1-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 10 games (three starts), striking out 28 batters and walking 12 in 32 innings. In 2008, he pitched for the AZL Royals and was 2-2 with a 5.82 ERA in 11 games (five starts). He averaged more than a strikeout per inning, fanning 41 batters in 38 2/3 frames. Going into 2009, Baseball America ranked him the 20th-best prospect in the Royals system, one spot after Salvador Perez and ahead of Mitch Maier. He pitched for the Burlington Royals that year, going 3-6 with a 4.09 ERA in 13 games (eight starts).

Overall, Fortuna was 6-10 with a 4.60 ERA in 34 games (16 starts). He had 112 strikeouts in 121 1/3 innings.

On March 24, 2013, he died from cancer at the age of 22.
