De La Cruz began his professional career with the Chicago White Sox, and he was 2-4 with a save and a 3.26 ERA for the GCL White Sox in 1986. He was 5-3 with a 1.73 ERA in the GCL in 1987, but his ERA was 8.22 in 7 games for the Daytona Beach Admirals. He was 4th in the Gulf Coast League in ERA, between Chris Cerny and Todd Gedaminski. De La Cruz then went 7-3 with a 2.96 ERA for the Utica Blue Sox in 1988, but he struggled in A class again as his ERA was 6.14 in 13 games with a 2-8 record for the South Bend White Sox. He tied Randy Tomlin and others for 10th in the New York-Penn League in ERA.

In 1989, De La Cruz improved to 7-3 with a 2.30 ERA in South Bend, and he also went 8-4 with a 2.78 ERA for the Sarasota White Sox. Only Sam Chavez had more wins in the Pale Hose farm chain while De La Cruz was also 7th with 117 K. However, he struggled in 1990 as his ERA was 7.55 in 13 starts for the Birmingham Barons (to go with a 1-7 record and 1.86 WHIP), and he was placed in the GCL for the entire 1991 season. De La Cruz had a 3.29 ERA in 10 games there, and the White Sox released him. The Uni-President Lions signed him, but De La Cruz had a 6.64 ERA in 5 appearances, and his professional career ended.

He had gone 33-35 with two saves and a 3.74 ERA in 115 games as a pro, throwing two shutouts.
