Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Carlos Alonso began his professional career in 2010. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 32nd round of the 2010 amateur draft. The scout was Paul Murphy.
Prior to playing professionally, he spent two years at Santa Barbara City College and two years at University of Delaware. The slash lines he posted were, in order: .379/.531/.447, .362/.500/.434, .380/.480/.546 and .389/.467/.708. Combined, he had 271 hits, 55 doubles, 21 home runs, 192 runs scored, 129 RBI, 55 stolen bases, 102 walks and only 79 strikeouts in 715 at-bats.
On the face of it, collegiate success did not immediately parlay into professional success, however -- he hit .265/.347/.415 at Low A ball his first year, though he batted .322/.436/.425 in 53 games between the Williamsport Crosscutters and Lakewood BlueClaws in 2011. He fielded .996 in 2013, earning him a Rawlings Gold Glove as the top defensive second baseman in the minor leagues. He hit double digit home runs for the first time in 2014 for the Reading Phillies. He began 2015 with Reading, but tore his ACL early in the season.
