Biographical Information

The brother of big leaguer Glenn McQuillen and minor leaguer Jack McQuillen, Carl McQuillen played a dozen years of minor league ball and managed for several seasons.

He debuted in 1941, going 12 for 48 between the Sanford Seminoles and Orlando Senators. He hit .287/?/.348 in 43 games for the 1942 Augusta Tigers and was also briefly with the Mooresville Moors. In 1943, he split time between the Norfolk Tars (.230/.296/.286 in 80 G) and Lancaster Red Roses (.337/.371/.440 in 41 G). He split 1944 between Norfolk (.239/.298/.334) and the Binghamton Triplets (8 for 55, 4 2B, HR, 6 BB). His 21 assists for Norfolk were third-most among Piedmont League outfielders. He had a strong season for Norfolk in '45, hitting .301 with 39 doubles and 7 triples, slugging .427. He led the Piedmont League in doubles, one ahead of Earl Pugh, was third in hits (170, behind Tom West and Frank Campos) and was second in total bases (241, 30 behind West).

In 1946, he played for the Montgomery Rebels (.254/.287/.335 in 68 G) and Dallas Rebels (.244/.263/.308 in 23 G). Moving down several notches to the Dunn-Erwin Twins, he pounded the ball in 1947 (.331, 36 2B, 11 3B, 19 HR, 121 RBI, .545 SLG). He tied Otis Stephens for second in the Tobacco State League in doubles, tied for 6th in triples, tied Elzer Marx for second in home runs (13 behind Orville Nesselrode) and was second to Nesselrode in total bases and RBI. He began 1948 as the Twins' player-manager but did not hit as well (.268/?/.366 in 54 G) and moved on to the Greenville Greenies (.266/?/.435 in 33 G).

He was player-manager of the 1949 Federalsburg Feds and hit .277 with 17 home runs and a .470 slugging percentage. He was second in the Eastern Shore League in dingers, two behind Bob Westfall, and was 5th with 78 RBI. He played in 1950 for the Pulaski Counts (.262/.342/.377 in 33 G) and Oil City Refiners (.303/.441/.450 in 29 G). He hit .268 and slugged .403 for the Franklin Kildees in '51 and finished the season at the reigns. He wound down his career in 1952 with the Hannibal Stags (.283/.381/.360 in 65 G) and St. Hyachinthe A's (.224/.272/.290 in 26 G).
