The Calgary Vipers began play in the independent Northern League in 2005. They were led by skipper Mike Busch for their first four seasons, after which he was succeeded by Morgan Burkhart. They play their home games in Foothills Stadium.

At the end of the 2007 season, the Vipers announced that they would be leaving the Northern League along with the Edmonton Cracker-Cats and joining the Golden Baseball League. After two seasons, the league merged with two other circuits to form the North American League, with Calgary becoming part of its 5-team western division in 2011.
