Biographical Information[edit]

Diminutive infielder Chad Durbin first garnered attention as the forgotten man in the high-profile trade that sent Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams to the New York Yankees in return for P Nestor Cortes on December 13, 2024. With the other two players involved being recent All-Stars, Durbin's name was only mentioned in passing, but he had recently been added to the Yankees' 40-man roster, in order not to expose him to the 2024 Rule V Draft. It was also his second major league trade, having been acquired by the Yankees from the Atlanta Braves in return for P Lucas Luetge on December 28, 2022.

Durbin went to Washington University in St. Louis, an institution better known for its academics than for its sports teams, from where he was drafted by the Braves in the 14th round of the 2021 amateur draft. He had hit .385 with 7 homers in 40 games in his final season, and also done well when playing in the Summer collegiate Northwoods League for three seasons. He spent two seasons in the Braves' system, hitting .268 in 17 games for the FCL Braves in 2021, and .241 in 105 games between the Augusta GreenJackets and Rome Braves in 2022.

After moving to the Yankees' system, he played for the High A Hudson Valley Renegades and AA Somerset Patriots in 2023, hitting .304/.395/.427 in 69 games while missing almost two months with an injury. In 2024, he missed another month of action and made rehabilitation assignments in the Florida State League and Eastern League, but otherwise played 82 games in AAA with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, where he hit .287 with 10 homers and 60 RBIs, earning his promotion to the major league roster. He was a shortstop in college, but second base was his primary position in the pros.
