Biographical Information[edit]
Caleb Cali was drafted by the Seattle Mariners organization in the 16th round of the 2023 Amateur Draft after spending his senior year of college as an Arkansas Razorback (the scout was Patrick O'Grady). In his senior year, he slashed .308/.412/.512 with 9 home runs, 2 doubles, and 37 RBI in 172 at bats. His high on base percentage stemmed from 27 walks and four beanballs in 204 plate appearances. Prior to his time in Fayetteville, he spent three summers in three different summer collegiate leagues, where he slashed an aggregate .267/.376/.395; his batting average improved over 100 points all three years (from .111 to .252 to .360), though saw 63% of his plate appearances in his second year, 2021 with the Danville Otterbots of the Appalachian League.
Upon being drafted by the M's chain in 2023, he was originally assigned to the rookie league level, the ACL Mariners. In 13 games, he posted a .282/.378/.513 slash line, accompanied by 2 homers, 3 doubles, and 6 RBI.
To begin 2024, he was assigned to the class A Modesto Nuts. In 26 games, he ripped up California League pitching to the tune of .327/.443/.535. He drove in 22 runs in 101 at bats on the strength of 10 doubles, 2 triples, and 2 long balls while splitting time between the two corner infield positions. On May 15, he was moved up to Advanced-A and the Northwest League's Everett AquaSox. He struggled initially, going 0 for his first 16; in his 17th at bat on May 22, he clubbed a 5th inning two-run home run to give his AquaSox a 7-0 lead over the Tri-City Dust Devils, knocking starting pitcher Chris Clark out of the ballgame; the final score was 7-1. He continued to struggle, with a .180 batting average through June, but with a very strong on base percentage of .336, and he was hitting for power with a .377 slugging average, 6 home runs, and 18 RBI. On July 21, he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 11th inning against the Hillsboro Hops with Hunter Fitz-Gerald on first base; Fitz-Gerald had just tied the game at 3-3 with an RBI single. Cali smoked a two-run home run off Zane Russell to end the game at 5-3. That proved to be a turning point, as he slashed .271/.358/.451 from that point through August; he hit 5 home runs and drove in 20 runs in August.
