Biographical Information[edit]

Butch Baccala has been a minor league pitcher and a scout.

The Philadelphia Phillies took Baccala in the 12th round of the 1983 amateur draft. He only got into one game for the Bend Phillies that summer (3 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 3 R) before a shoulder injury ended his career. He later scouted for the Cincinnati Reds (2000-2008?) and Seattle Mariners (2009- ). He signed Chris Gruler. While with the Reds, he got into trouble with management for blogging about his life as a scout.

Trouble found him again with the Mariners, as on August 28, 2014, he got into a public fight with Jesus Montero while the latter was on a rehabilitation assignment with the Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League. Reports indicated that Baccala taunted Montero over his lack of hustle while serving as a base coach, then aggravated things by sending the player an ice cream sandwich in the dugout as a snide comment on his weight issues. Montero threw the snack back at him and the two got into a shouting match in full view of the spectators, exchanging heated profanities and almost coming to blows. Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik took the incident very seriously, stating that Montero would not play again that year, and asking Baccala to return home until he could decide on his future.
