Biographical Information[edit]
Burton Shipley played off and on in the Blue Ridge League and Eastern Shore League between 1915 and 1923. He served as player/manager in 1922 and 1923.
Shipley entered the Navy in 1918 and was commisioned as a lieutenant. After the war, Shipley served as athletic director, baseball coach, and basketball coach at the University of Delaware until 1922.
Shipley was the basketball coach at the University of Maryland for 24 seasons, retiring after the 1947 season. He was also the head baseball coach from 1924 to 1960, compiling a 393-290 record. The Terrapins baseball team plays at Shipley Field, named after the long time coach.
