Biographical Information

Milton "Buck" West played for the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1884 and later the Cleveland Spiders in 1890. The first was a team in the American Association and the second a team in the National League. Both seasons were years of three major leagues. In 1890, he also worked as a fill-in umpire in one game.

West was born in Ohio, and both of his major league teams were based in Ohio. In the minors, he played for teams in Ohio, in the Midwest and on the East Coast, later playing in the South. His career ran at least from 1883-1895, and he managed in 1885.

Cy Young, also born in Ohio, was a rookie on the 1890 Spiders, a team on which West was one of the older players.

An article about sports in Saginaw, MI says that West later became a wealthy businessman.

This article carries his obituary. He lived in Mansfield, OH from time to time during his life, and was said as a ballplayer to have wonderful speed. He had a retail liquor business and a restaurant. He also owned a number of racing harness horses.
