Biographical Information[edit]

Bubba Thompson was selected by the Texas Rangers with the 26th pick of the 2017 amateur draft; he was the first of two first-round selection by the Rangers that year, the second being Chris Seise, with the 29th pick. An outfielder, he began his pro career that same year with the AZL Rangers, where he hit .257 in 30 games, scoring 23 runs. In 2018, he played 84 games with the Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League, hitting .289/.344/.446 with 8 homers and 42 RBIs. He was named an organizational All-Star by MiLB. In 2019, he was with the Down East Wood Ducks of the Carolina League, but he missed two months from mid-April to mid-June with a broken hamate bone, and then a week later returned to the injured list for another three weeks. He played regularly from mid-July onward, but hit just .178 with 5 homers and 21 RBIs in 57 games as it was clear the injury was still bothering him. He did a lot better in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .245 with 3 homers and 9 RBIs in 57 games.

He made his major league debut on August 4, 2022 starting in left field and batting ninth against the Chicago White Sox. He went 1 for 3 as the Rangers won the game, 3-2. Another first-round pick, Cole Ragans also made his debut as the Rangers' starting pitcher in the game.

He was signed by scout Brian Morrison.
