Biographical Information[edit]

Bryce Darnell played in the minors then became a college coach.

Darnell was All-State in baseball and football in high school and All-Conference in basketball. He was at Minnesota for a year then transferred to Missouri Southern State, hitting .436 as a sophomore, .364 as a junior and .339 as a senior. He was among the school's career leaders in doubles (40, 7th), average (.366, 6th) and fielding (.976, 7th). The St. Louis Cardinals took him in the 40th round of the 1995 amateur draft (after his junior year) and the Arizona Diamondbacks chose him in the 58th round of the 1996 amateur draft. He was 1 for 13 with a run and a RBI for the Visalia Oaks that summer, handling 24 chances error-free at catcher; one of their other backstops that year was Rod Barajas.

He was head coach and social studies teacher at Webb City High School for eight years, going 160-43 with one state title. He then became the third coach at Missouri Southern State, succeeding his former coach, Warren Turner. After 14 seasons, he was 405-294 with two Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Coach of the Year honors.
