Biographical Information[edit]
Giant-sized 1B Bryce Ball was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 24th round of the 2019 amateur draft out of Dallas Baptist University. Seemingly not too concerned about doctrinal rigidity, he had attended a Roman Catholic high school in his home town of Mason City, IA before moving on to the Southern Baptist university, with a two-year stint at North Iowa Community College in between. In any case, theology aside, he began his professional career that same year with the Danville Braves of the Appalachian League, before moving on to the Rome Braves, in the South Atlantic League. Between the two stops, he hit .329/.395/.628, with an impressive 18 doubles and 17 homers in just 62 games.
After sitting around in 2020 because the minor leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic, he resumed his minor league apprenticeship in 2021 with the Rome Braves, who had now been switched to the High-A East in the minor league reorganization that had taken place the previous off-season. So, even if he was back with the same team, he had in fact been promoted one level. He hit just .206 in 53 first-half games, but continued to flash some good power, with 12 doubles and 6 homers. On July 15th, just as the second half was about to resume, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs in return for LF Joc Pederson as the Braves needed to quickly find a replacement for Ronald Acuna, out for the season after tearing his ACL on the penultimate day of the first half.
