Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Bryan Mata was signed by the Boston Red Sox on January 27, 2016 out of Venezuela. His first professional experience came that same year with the DSL Red Sox 2, for whom he went 4-4, 2.80 in 14 starts. Moving to the United States in 2017, he was assigned to the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League, where he continued to do well. In 17 starts, his record was 5-6, 3.74, with 74 strikeouts in 77 innings. In 2018, he moved up again, to the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League. He struggled a bit with his control at the higher level, with 58 walks against 61 strikeouts in 72 innings spread over 17 starts, but there was no arguing with his superlative stuff, which earned him an invitation to pitch in the 2018 Futures Game for the World Team. He finished the year at 6-3, 3.50.
