Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Bruce Von Hoff played parts of two seasons in the majors with the Houston Astros.

Born in Oakland, California, Von Hoff went to high school in Batavia, Illinois, and college in at Northern Illinois University. He signed with the San Francisco Giants prior to the 1964 season and was selected by the Houston Astros in the 1964 Rule V Draft after one season in their chain. He reached the majors with the Astros in September 1965, giving up 3 earned runs in 3 innings of relief work over 3 games. Pitching for the Durham Bulls the following season, he threw a no-hitter against the Rocky Mount Leafs on August 10th. Back in the majors for part of 1967, he made 10 starts for Houston, going 0-3 with a 4.83 ERA. That was his last taste of big league ball, but he continued to play in the minors through 1970.

After baseball, Von Hoff worked for a couple of trucking companies, was a bus driver, and had other jobs in Florida.

Bruce's brother Byron Von Hoff was also a big star in high school and college, and was signed by the New York Mets. Byron roomed with Jerry Koosman in the minors and had some success as a pitcher but an injury ended his career.
