Biographical Information[edit]

Brooks McNiven is a San Francisco Giants farmhand who has pitched for Team Canada.

McNiven had a 2.20 ERA as a college senior, finishing 11th in the NAIA. He had just taken over as staff ace after Jeff Francis left after his junior year in 2002. McNiven was the first Canadian taken in the 2003 amateur draft, four picks before Jamie Romak. The San Francisco Giants selected McNiven in the 4th round of the draft. He debuted with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and was 7-5 with a 3.60 ERA.

In 2004, McNiven went 6-8 with a 4.37 ERA for the San Jose Giants. He moved primarily to the bullpen in 2005, going 7-2 with a 4.24 ERA for San Jose. In 2006, he was with San Jose and was 8-7 with a 3.96 ERA, walking only 19 in 109 innings pitched.

McNiven moved to AA with the Connecticut Defenders, posting a 7-6, 3.55 record in 15 starts and 15 relief appearances. He walked 29 in 116 2/3 innings but only struck out 41.

McNiven joined Team Canada for the 2007 Baseball World Cup. He threw six shutout innings in his only start, beating Rob Cordemans in a game against the Dutch national team, which finished 4th in the event and beat Cuba once. Only Jamie Richmond threw more innings for Canada in the Cup without allowing a run.

He stayed with Canada for the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, during which they clinched a spot in the 2008 Summer Games. McNiven was 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA, taking Canada's only loss in a 10-5 defeat against the Australian national team. McNiven pitched well in his second outing, against Germany.

McNiven was 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in the 2008 Olympics, allowing 3 hits in 8 innings. He got the win over the Dutch national team as the first hurler in a combined shutout.
