Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Brian Serven reached the majors with the Colorado Rockies in 2022, after having been drafted by Colorado in the 5th round of the 2016 amateur draft out of Arizona State University. He saw considerable playing time during his rookie season, appearing in 62 games, but hit just .203 with 6 homers and 16 RBIs for an OPS+ of 59. He was the main back-up for Elias Diaz. In 2023, he appeared in just 11 big league games, going 3 for 23, and also spent time with the AAA Albuquerque Isotopes where he hit .199 in 38 games.

Early in 2024, he changed teams twice, first being claimed on waivers by the Chicago Cubs on January 5th, and then by the Toronto Blue Jays on January 16th. He was seen as a depth option by the Jays, to share catching duties with the AAA Buffalo Bisons, but plans changed when Danny Jansen, who was expected to share catching duties with Alejandro Kirk at the major league level, broke a bone in his wrist during spring training. Serven turned out to be the best option to start the year in Toronto, where he was set to back up Kirk until Jansen was ready to return. He had another opportunity to play in August and September, after the Jays traded Jansen to the Boston Red Sox, and while his catching and game calling were alright, his bat was terrible. He hit .159 in 28 games, with no homers and 3 RBIs, for an OPS+ of 35. He was designated for assignment on September 16th, then sent outright to AAA, being replaced on the roster by Tyler Heineman, who had previously served as the Jays' third-string catcher. At Buffalo, Serven hit .265 in 40 games with 3 homers and 15 RBIs.
