Biographical Information[edit]

Brent Honeywell is the father of Brent Honeywell Jr. He spent three seasons in the minor league system of the Pittsburgh Pirates between 1988 and 1990.

Undrafted, he began his career in 1988 with the GCL Pirates and Princeton Pirates of the Appalachian League, going a combined 2-4, 2.68 in 14 games. That allowed him to continue pitching the next season, when he went 8-3, 2.98 for the Augusta Pirates of the South Atlantic League. All of his appearances were in relief, and he logged 48 1/3 innings, striking out 46. He started the 1990 season in the Carolina League with the Salem Buccaneers, but the results were poor as in 22 games, he was 2-2 with an ERA of 6.65 and fewer strikeouts than walks. He was sent back down to Augusta to finish the year and did well, going 4-1, 1.15 in 13 games and picking up 4 saves. However, the Pirates had seen enough and he never pitched professionally after that.

He went into coaching after his retirement, including at Burke County High School, located not far south of Augusta, GA, where he played professionally. His son was born a few years later, in 1995. He was a cousin of Mike Marshall, he of the unusual pitching theories and owner of one of the best screwballs in history. It has been reported that he learned the pitch from Marshall and later taught it to his son.
