Biographical Information[edit]
Lefthanded pitcher Braxton Garrett was the 7th overall pick of the 2016 amateur draft, by the Miami Marlins, out of a high school in Alabama. He made his professional debut the next year, in 2017, with the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League. The Marlins handled him carefuly, having him only pitch in an instructional league the previous season, and keeping him in extended spring training before allowing him to join a team. He made just 4 starts, going 1-0, 2.93, and pitching 13 1/3 innings before being shut down by an injury. He underwent Tommy John surgery that June and then missed all of 2018 as well. He was considered the top prospect in the Marlins organization (and #37 in baseball as a whole) at the time he was injured.
He came back in 2019 to make 21 starts, 20 with the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads and one in AA with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. In Jupiter, he was 6-6, 3.34 with 118 strikeouts in 105 innings, re-establishing himself as a top prospect for the Marlins. He made his major league debut with the Marlins on September 13th, giving up 1 earned run in 5 innings in a winning start against the Philadelphia Phillies in the second game of a doubleheader. He had spent the season until then at the Marlins' alternate training site with the minor leagues being shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic.
