Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Brandon Bantz was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 30th round of the 2009 amateur draft. He was called up to the big leagues on June 5, 2013, to serve as an emergency catcher behind Kelly Shoppach. Jesus Sucre had been injured the night before, but not seriously enough to land on the disabled list until June 8th, and Bantz made his debut that day, starting behind the plate against the New York Yankees and batting ninth. Facing veteran Andy Pettitte, he grounded out to shortstop Jayson Nix in his first at bat, after getting a nice ovation and tipping his batting helmet to the fans. He struck out against Pettitte in his second at-bat before being replaced by pinch-hitter Endy Chavez in the 8th inning with the M's trailing, 3-1. He was designated for assignment on June 11th to make room for top prospect Mike Zunino. He spent 2014 in the Washington Nationals system and 2015 in the Miami Marlins system, never returning for a second big league game.
