Biographical Information[edit]

Bobby McKercher is the brother of Tim McKercher. His father Roy was a San Francisco Giants bat boy.

As a youth, Bobby was a teammate of Barry Bonds and was called Bonds' best friend. McKercher also played alongside Greg Anderson, who later achieved notoriety as Bonds' personal trainer when Bonds was being suspected of steroid use. Both Bonds and McKercher were picked in the 1982 amateur draft, both opting for college instead; Barry went in the second round and Bobby in the 23rd (to the Texas Rangers). Both went on to elite baseball programs, Barry at Arizona State University and Bobby at Oklahoma State University. The two schools were going to the College World Series almost every year at that point. The book Game of Shadows claims that McKercher was drafted again out of college but that his "minor-league career ended in disappointment". There is no record, though, of McKercher being drafted out of college or playing in the minors (his brother Tim did spend a year in the minor leagues). Bobby then became a baseball instructor for kids and drove a recycling truck. When Bonds signed with the Giants, McKercher and Bonds briefly ran a bagel shop together.
