Robert Nutting

Biographical Information[edit]

Bob Nutting is the son of Ogden Nutting, who was part of the ownership group led by Kevin McClatchy that purchased the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1996. Bob had been president and CEO of Ogden Newspapers and Nutting Newspapers since 1990, managing his family's media empire. Bob later became chairman of the board of directors of the Pirates and in 2007, a request was put in for Nutting to replace McClatchy as the principal owner of the Pirates. The Nutting family already had a majority share and had been making decisions. When Bob became the public spokesman, it was his first appearance ever before the Pittsburgh media, which had often criticized him for being behind a profits-over-performance mindset. Many fans began referring to him as "Bottom-Line Bob" as a result of this. Nutting denied such a philosophy in his first media appearance. In 2022, Nutting became the subject of a viral internet meme after he took a photo with a fan wearing a shirt that said "sell the team" on it.
