Biographical Information

Bob Hale played seven seasons in the big leagues, breaking in with a splash in 1955 as he hit .357 in 182 at-bats for the Baltimore Orioles at age 21.

Hale played exclusively first base when in the field, playing in 120 games at the position in his career, but since he appeared in 376 major league games, clearly his prime occupation was as a pinch-hitter. After his first couple of seasons, he rarely played in the field. He hit for a good average - .273 - but had little power, with only two career home runs.

His major league career ended with the New York Yankees in 1961, a team that won the 1961 World Series, although Hale did not appear. That was the year that Roger Maris hit 61 home runs.

He played in the Northern League and the Piedmont League before coming to the majors.

Bob and teammate Brooks Robinson, who was three years younger, broke in the same year, 1955.

Notable Achievement

• Won a World Series with the New York Yankees in 1961 (he did not play in the World Series).
