Biographical Information[edit]
Bob Costas is a well-known national TV announcer for baseball, basketball and other sports who spent the bulk of his career for NBC. He worked on Game of the Week broadcasts during the 1980s, partnering with Sal Bando for one year and with Tony Kubek from 1983 to 1989. He also worked a number of League Championship Series during that period and was a pre-game reporter on World Series broadcasts. Before joining NBC, he was a basketball and football announcer for CBS in the 1970s. He joined the MLB Network in 2009 as the network's documentary host as one of the network's original employees.
He had a contract with NBC running through the end of 2021, but in January 2019 he reached an agreement with the network to terminate his contract. He had been working less in recent years and explained that his skills and interests were no longer a perfect fit with NBC's. He was planning to continue some of his other work, however, including with the MLB Network. He officially announced his retirement from broadcasting after the 2024 World Series.
Costas has hosted twelve Olympic Games - winter and summer - and has won 17 Sports Emmy awards. In 2017, he was named the recipient of the Ford Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting. He was selected from among a group of eight broadcasters whose work had been mainly at the national level.
