Biographical Information[edit]
The St. Louis Cardinals signed 18-year-old Bob Blaylock as an amateur free agent in 1953 and promptly shipped him to the Class D Ardmore Cardinals, where he went 9-1 with a 3.49 ERA. The hard-throwing right-hander averaged a strikeout per inning with 155 punchouts for the Fresno Cardinals Class C team in 1954, along with a 9-8 record and a 3.89 ERA. Blaylock was in the minors until 1956, when he went 9-4 with a 1.67 ERA at the start of the year with the Rochester Red Wings, before coming up to St. Louis, where he struggled with a 1-6 record in 14 games. After leading the American Association with 193 strikeouts for the Omaha Cardinals in 1958, he had a second and last trial with St. Louis in 1959, dropping his only decision. Bob spent the next four seasons in the AA Texas League with the Tulsa Oilers, where he went 32-20 with a 4.00 ERA. 1962 was his tenth and final year in pro ball.
Although Blaylock's major league numbers were not great (he was 1-7 in 17 games, pitching 50 innings for a 5.94 ERA), his minor league stats show he was 76-75, appearing in 302 games, pitching 1,344 innings, giving up 1,221 hits and 661 walks with a 3.72 ERA.
As of November 2008, Blaylock was a motel manager, working and residing in Tulsa. His grandsons, Josh Beal and Justin Beal, played in the minor leagues.
