Biographical Information[edit]

Second baseman Billy Hall had a professional career that spanned from 1991 to 2005. The fleet-footed infielder stole 679 bases at all levels, including 104 in a single campaign.

Hall was taken by the San Diego Padres in the 17th round of the 1991 amateur draft and began his professional career that year. He was signed by scout Jonathan Story. In his second campaign, 1992, he hit .356/.418/.432 with 49 stolen bases in 119 games for the High Desert Mavericks. In 1994, he reached Triple-A for the first time.

After spending a couple years in the Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies systems, he moved to the independent Allentown Ambassadors, with whom he hit .323/.380/.465 with 41 stolen bases in 79 games in 1998. In 1999, Hall went to Korea and despite hitting a meager .244/.303/.316, he stole 47 bags.

2000 was a year for the ages. Playing for the independent Somerset Patriots, Hall stole 104 bases and scored 111 runs in just 125 games, and followed that with 72 stolen bases and 113 runs scored in 120 games in 2001. He notched another 52 steals in 2002 and, in a return to affiliated ball, swiped 40 bags in 113 games in the Florida Marlins system. He finished his pro career with 62 stolen bases in 85 games back with Somerset.

In addition to his nearly 700 steals, Hall had 1,661 hits and 1,052 runs scored in 1,546 career games.

  • One source says he holds the professional baseball record for most consecutive steal attempts without being caught stealing (66).
