Biographical Information

Billy Campbell pitched four years in the National League. He was 31 years old by the time he made his big league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1905. Although he had previously gone 26-14 in 1904 with the minor league Louisville Colonels, he lasted only two games with the Cardinals that first year. Spending the rest of 1906 and much of 1907 with the Harrisburg Senators, he put up a record of 21-8 with Harrisburg in 1907 and came back to the majors for three games with the Cincinnati Reds at the end of that season, winning all three.

He returned to pitch 30+ games with the Reds in both 1908 and 1909, with ERAs that were below average but not terrible. However, by 1909 he was 35 years old and that was the end of his major league career. He continued to pitch in the minors through age 39. In 1912, at age 38, he went 17-10 for the Mobile Sea Gulls.

He also occasionally played outfield in the minors.
