Biographical Information

Pitcher Bill McGee compiled some impressive statistics in the 1930s as a minor league farmhand of the St. Louis Cardinals. He led the Western Association in wins in 1934, notching 23 victories for the Springfield Red Wings. In 1935 McGee moved onto the Texas League where he finished with a 15-13 record along with a 2.96 ERA for the Houston Buffaloes. McGee's big league debut occurred that year as well. He started the final regular season game for the Cardinals and pitched a complete game win against the pennant winning Chicago Cubs. McGee found himself back in the minors for most of 1936 and 1937. Again he was highly effective, leading American Association pitchers in ERA both years.

By 1938 McGee earned a spot on the Cardinals roster, regularly pitching for the team over the next 3 years including a 16-10 record in 1940. He suffered a poor year in 1941 as he went a combined 2-10, splitting time between the Cardinals and the New York Giants. After a final return campaign in 1942 with the Giants McGee left the game, finishing with a 46-41 record over eight big league seasons.
