Biographical Information

Billy Greenwood holds the record for the most career games played at second base as a left-handed thrower. In spite of his low batting averages, Bill was consistently a regular at second base for various teams in the American Association in the 1880s.

He also played a number of years in the minors for teams in the Eastern part of the country.

The book Baseball in Baltimore: the First 100 Years has a photo of the 1888 Baltimore Orioles which includes him. The book Baseball in Columbus has a photo of the 1889 Columbus Solons team which includes him.

In addition to playing second base as a lefty, he also appeared in 30 games at shortstop and umpired one American Association game in 1884.

His obituary in Sporting Life said that he dropped dead on the street while discussing baseball. It mentioned that he had captained a number of his teams, and that illness forced his retirement from baseball. After that he had been a weaver.
