Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Delaney played for the 1890 Cleveland Spiders. The team's regular second baseman was Joe Ardner, but Joe's last game was August 18, while Bill's first game was August 21. Bill played 36 games before the season ended. Neither Joe nor Bill played in the majors after 1890.
Bill was born and died in Ohio. He was born the same year that Deacon McGuire was also born in that state. Delaney played in the minors over a decade, often in Ohio. As of 1912 he was in the hotel business in Canton, OH. Sporting Life referred to him variously as Bill, Billy, Will or William.
"The four ex-Canton players - Virtue, Delaney, Berger and Young - were given a hearty reception when they made their appearance upon the diamond and at the plate." - Sporting Life, Sept. 27, 1890, reporting on a game between Pittsburgh and Cleveland that was played at Canton, OH, one in which Delaney hit a home run
