Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Brooks was a minor league player and long-time college coach. His brother Tunney Brooks played in the minors and coached high school for many years.
Brooks turned down a Brooklyn Dodgers contract to go to college. He played football at Wake Forest, then served in the Army Air Corps. He hit .247 and slugged .376 for the 1946 Wilson Tobs; he tied for 8th in the Coastal Plain League in doubles (23) but led in errors (70) despite playing primarily catcher. In 1947, he played for the New Bern Bears (.250/?/.333 in 58 G), Danville Leafs (9 for 28, 2B) and Manchester Giants (6 for 24, 2B). He hit .285/?/.433 with 76 RBI for New Bern in 1948. He then worked as a high school coach and teacher. From 1957-1983, he was the first baseball coach at Wilmington College/UNC Wilmington; he also coached basketball and directed athletics there. He won national junior college titles in 1961 and 1963 and took his team to the 1975 NAIA College World Series after it became a four-year institution. He coached Bill Haywood and Billy Harris in college.
