Biographical Information[edit]
Bert Snow pitched in the Oakland Athletics system from 1998 to 2000 and 2002 to 2004, before playing in independent ball from 2005 to 2008. He was taken by the Athletics in the 10th round of the 1998 amateur draft and was in Triple-A by 1999.
Primarily a starter his first campaign, he was 2-4 with a 5.23 ERA in 13 games (10 starts) in his initial showing, allowing 64 hits in 53 1/3 innings. Transitioning to the bullpen in 1999, he made 54 appearances (3 starts) between three clubs—including 2 for the Triple-A Vancouver Canadians—and had 125 strikeouts and 18 saves in 88 innings between them. He followed that with 101 strikeouts and 27 saves in 69 2/3 innings between two clubs in 2000, though it wasn't all rosy, as his record was 1-7.
After not playing in 2001, he returned to save 13 games and post a 3.18 ERA in 36 appearances between two clubs in 2002; in 39 2/3 innings, he had 54 Ks. His ERA slipped to 5.85 ERA in 2003, though he still had 13 saves, and in 2004 he rebounded to post a 2.59 ERA in 20 games for the Double-A Midland RockHounds.
The Athletics cut him loose following the 2004 campaign and he joined the independent Shreveport Sports, with whom he spent the rest of his career. Returning to the starting rotation, he was 11-6 with a 3.92 ERA in 20 starts his first year, averaging slightly more than a strikeout per inning. He was 9-3, 3.13 in 2006, though by 2007 the wheels started to fall off as he went 4-8, 3.79 in 19 starts. Things fell apart completely in 2008 as he went 1-10 with an 8.40 ERA in 16 games (14 starts) to finish his career. In 90 innings, he allowed 137 hits.
Overall, Snow went 11-25 with a 4.25 ERA in 6 seasons in the Athletics chain. In 334 1/3 innings, he allowed 301 hits and 168 walks, while striking out 394 batters. His career record at Double-A was just 4-19, despite a respectable 3.88 ERA in 156 games. With the Sports, he went 25-27 with a 4.59 ERA in 73 games (71 starts). Combined, he was 36-52 with 72 saves and a 4.45 ERA in 302 games (85 starts). In 781 1/3 innings, he allowed 764 hits and 326 walks, while striking out 735 batters.
