Biographical Information[edit]

Centerfielder Benny Montgomery was the 8th overall pick in the 2021 amateur draft, having been selected by the Colorado Rockies out of Red Land High School in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania. He signed on July 21 and played his first professional game on August 6 for the ACL Rockies, in which he went 1-3. He appeared in 14 games and slashed .340/.404/.383; his lone extra base hit was a triple. He had 21 total chances in centerfield, handled all of them without error (20 putouts and 1 assist) and stole 5 bases.

His promising start led the Rockies to advance him up to the Fresno Grizzlies for 2022. He played a key role in his first game at the A level, hitting a game-tying home run in the 8th inning off Clark Cota; the Grizzlies beat the Stockton Ports 5-4 in the bottom of the 9th courtesy a Zach Kokoska RBI double. He was slashing .267/.313/.433 on May 18 when he was felled by an injury. Among his 16 hits at the time were 2 doubles, 2 homers and a triple. He was out of action for more than a month and returned to Fresno after a six game tune up with the ACL Rockies and went on a tear. He hit safely in his first eight games back, including homering in his return engagement on July 6 (a 13-2 drubbing of the San Jose Giants), and six two-hit games. He collected 14 hits in 35 at bats and hit 3 doubles to boot. However, he did strikeout a semi-alarming 11 times in those 35 at bats. For the season, he slashed .313/.394/.502, hit 20 doubles, 3 triples, 6 long balls, and 9 stolen bases. After his stint on the injured list, he slashed .329/.420/.526 and reduced his strikeout percentage from what it had been prior to his injury.

He moved up the ranks once again for the 2023 season, beginning the year with the A+ Northwest League Spokane Indians. He got off to a good start in the Lilac City, hitting an RBI double and walking twice in his first game, a 7-4 victory over the Eugene Emeralds, and slashing .298/.365/.426 in his first two weeks with that double, a triple, a home run, and 2 outfield assists as the Indians' everyday centerfielder.
