Biographical Information[edit]

Ben Verlander is the brother of Justin Verlander. He hit .440 and had a 1.26 ERA in high school. He had a commitment to Old Dominion University out of high school when his brother's club, the Detroit Tigers, took him in the 46th round of the 2010 amateur draft. He did not sign. As a freshman in college, he was 1-2 with a 4.83 ERA. He fell to 0-1, 8.83 with 17 walks in 17 1/3 IP as a sophomore while batting .250/.311/.339 as a part-time outfielder. Moved full time to the outfield in 2013, he had an excellent season, hitting .367 with 11 homers and 37 RBI as a junior. The Tigers drafted him again, in the 14th round this time, in 2013, as Ben had made it clear that he was now ready to move to the pros. He made his minor league debut with the Connecticut Tigers on June 19th, going 1-for-3 against the Lowell Spinners.

He played five seasons in the minor leagues, from 2014 to 2017, topping at the High-A level, where he spent three seasons with the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the Florida State League. His best year was his penultimate one, 2016, when he hit .252/.303/.381 in 81 games for Lakeland. He did not have much power, his personal bests being 18 doubles and 5 homers - and he reached both totals in back-to-back years in 2015 and 206.
