Ben Carlson was an All-American hitter.
Carlson was All-State as a high school junior and senior and set a school record with 18 career home runs in 75 games; he had hit .436. Going on to college, he hit .274/.368/.444 as a freshman in 2007. The next year, Ben batted .379/.469/.678 with 17 homers, 56 runs and 67 RBI in 57 games despite a damaged left elbow. He set a new school record for home runs. Baseball America named him their All-American DH. He was also the All-Missouri Valley Conference DH. After surgery on his elbow, Carlson fell to .301/.444/.645 with 16 home runs, 49 runs and 51 RBI in 49 contests as a junior. He led the MVC in homers and was picked as an All-Conference outfielder.
Carlson was picked by the Cleveland Indians in the 6th round of the 2009 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that summer with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, hitting .228/.300/.317. Assigned to the Lake County Captains in 2010, Ben struggled more, batting only .176/.232/.265 with 58 strikeouts in 204 AB with nine walks and two dingers.
