Biographical Information[edit]

Beauty McGowan had three different stints in the majors leagues. He came up at a young age in 1922 and 1923, then returned in 1928 and 1929, and was back for one final season in 1937. In 1928 he had an impressive year, posting a batting line of .363/.425/.524 in 168 at-bats.

He played all of the outfield positions, but was most often in right field.

He is the only major leaguer remembered by the nickname "Beauty", although Dave Bancroft, who came up earlier, was nicknamed "Beauty". The name came from the movie "Black Beauty", which opened at the time. McGowan is also known as Frank McGowan.

In 1947 he was named as part of the inaugural class of the International League Hall of Fame. He managed the minor league Baltimore Orioles in 1933-1934 and then was the New England Scouting supervisor for the Baltimore Orioles from 1954 to 1973. He signed Steve Dalkowski and Tom Gastall.
