Biographical Information

Bart Cantz was a 19th century catcher who managed to play three seasons in the majors despite hitting under .200 and making 40 errors in 56 games. In 1888, when he came up with the Baltimore Orioles of the American Association, he was 28 and hit .167. The starting catcher, Chris Fulmer, hit .187 with 30 errors in 45 games. The next year, 1889, Bart hit .174 while the starter, Pop Tate, hit .182 with 25 errors in 62 games. In 1890, the year of three leagues, he appeared in 5 games for the Philadelphia Athletics, where the starting catcher, Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson, hit .237.

Bart also played in the minors in the Eastern League, the Western Association and the International Association.
