Biographical Information[edit]

OF Austin Hendrick was the 12th player selected in the 2020 amateur draft, by the Cincinnati Reds, but only the third high schooler, after Robert Hassell and Zac Veen. That draft was held in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and high school players were at a distinct disadvantage, not having had a senior season to showcase their talent. In addition, he had to wait until the following season to start his professional career, as the minor leagues were shut down at the time he was drafted. He had hit .056/.320/.056 for the US team that won Silver in the 2019 U-18 Baseball World Cup.

He made his pro debut in 2021 with the Daytona Tortugas in what used to be the Florida State League but that year only was called the Low-A Southeast. He hit .211/.380/.388 with 7 homers and 29 RBIs. He also struggled in 2022, which he split between Daytona and the Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League, finishing at .217/.306/.433 in 109 games. One positive indicator was that he was showing signs of above average power, with 21 doubles and 21 homers, leading to 69 RBIs, but his 165 strikeouts were a concern.
