Augusta College was renamed Augusta State University in 1996. Augusta State merged with Georgia Health Sciences University to form Georgia Regents University in August 2012. After settling a lawsuit with Regent University in Georgia, the school became Augusta University in September 2015.
The university gained national attention in December of 2015 after one of their former baseball players, Shannon Johnson died while saving a friend from the 2015 San Bernardino Shooting and was honored as a hero by the university[1].
