Biographical Information[edit]
Ashley Ponce has been a minor league infielder.
Ponce signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an undrafted free agent; the scouts were Rene Gayo and Jose Pineda. He made his pro debut with the 2009 VSL Pirates, hitting .268/.354/.343 and stealing 14 bases in 21 tries. He led the Venezuelan Summer League with 10 sacrifice hits and was 4th in steals. In 2010, he repeated with the VSL Pirates and batted .268/.350/.312, fielding .930 as their starting shortstop.
In 2011, he came to the US, appearing for the GCL Pirates (8 for 27, 6 BB) and State College Spikes (.177/.282/.211 in 45 G). He fielded .955 at short. In 2012, he eked out a .192/.259/.233 line for the West Virginia Power, being used as a backup infielder. Ponce played for the Panamanian national team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. In his first two games, he was a defensive sub for Jeffer Patiño at second base. He did not bat in a 6-2 win over Nicaragua. In a 9-7 win over Colombia, he had a sacrifice bunt his first time, then a sacrifice fly off Yesid Salazar to score Jahdiel Santamaria his second trip up. He started at second and hit 9th in the 1-0 finale loss to Brazil. He lined out and struck out against Rafael Fernándes before leaving for pinch-hitter Javier Castillo in the 8th.
After his playing career ended, Ponce returned to Panama and did some coaching along with his twin brother Dimas Ponce. He was a third base coach with the Federales de Chiriquí during the 2020/2021 season when the team participated in the 2021 Caribbean Series. Ponce coached the Federales again in 2021/2022. The Toronto Blue Jays hired him in 2022 as a position coach with the Vancouver Canadians. After this season he once again coached third base for the Chiriqui team that earned a spot in 2023 Caribbean Series.
Ponce was a coach for the FCL Blue Jays in 2023 and bench coach of the DSL Blue Jays in 2024.
